January 2012  Newsletter

Hi people,

First email newsletter of this Olympic year, so at the risk of interrupting your training regimes, here are a few upcoming events at the sailing club.

The club is running three courses at the club on weekends in March.  We believe that these courses will benefit members and also raise the skill level at the club and so we are prepared to at least partly cover the costs.  We hope that members will find these useful.  Details are as follows:

RYA VHF RADIO COURSE This certification is required to operate VHF marine radios (apart from use of ‘marina channels’ on club business, for which we have a separate club licence).  For safety reasons, and because we now often race without safety boat cover, it has been agreed that racing Keelboats should in future use VHF.  Such use would require a crew member to be suitably certified.  We have negotiated a 25% discount on the usual price (£120) and the club is offering to subsidise members by paying one third of the (already reduced) cost of each course.

FIRST AID COURSE Accidents can, and do, happen.  Not only on the water but around the home, at work and at play.  The club is paying half the cost of this course and so it represents a great opportunity for members to upgrade or refresh their skills.

POWER BOAT TRAINING Learn how to operate a power boat so you can undertake your boat duties more safely and with added confidence.  Free course

Please don’t be shy about applying to attend any of these courses which we believe can be of great benefit to members.  But please remember that numbers are limited so contact the relevant organiser as soon as possible to secure your place – first come, first served.

EASTER REGATTA April 8/9 (Sun/Mon).  First racing of the year. Very civilised start times (12:45/13:25) so you can afford to have a good time at the.............

FITTING OUT SUPPER April 7 (Easter Saturday).  This is being held at the General’s Arms, Little Baddow (where we held the Laying Up Supper).  Full details soon but please contact Gay or Nigel Whiting (01621 774789) to register your interest.

CHANGING ROOMS – We are planning to redecorate before the start of the season so will all members please remove any personal “junk” asap (including boat parts) or Mike Hopper will bin it!  (By the way, will the individual who “borrowed” Mike’s winter walking hat on the Icicle weekend, please return it!).

Will members please pass this on to any friends and family who cannot receive emails.  Thanks.

See you all soon
